Through the Lens: Digital Photography 101

For all of you that expressed interested in the photography workshop,  I am introducing Through the Lens: Digital Photography 101.  A workshop for anyone that wants to improve their photography skills.

I have started a Yahoo Group that I will use to send out the starting date, reminders and or any news about the assignments.  Please join only if you would like to be on the mailing list.  This is strictly for updates on this workshop.   You do not have to join the group to participate.  I have formed the Yahoo group as a convenience to prevent anyone from missing an assignment.  Also, if an assignment has to be postponed, I will have the ability to give you a heads up.

If you choose not to join the Yahoo group, but still want to keep track of the assignments, look for the page Through the Lens, right up there on the left sidebar under Twaddle.

So what do you need to take this workshop?  Well… for one, a camera.   To follow along with the assignments you should have at least a 3 mega pixel camera with optional manual settings, (allows you to change the aperture and shutter speed.)  If you do not have the ability to change the settings on your camera, you are absolutely still welcome to join, but will have a hard time following along with many of the assignments.

You will also need a place to upload your photos, such as a blog or a Flickr account.   When you are done with the assignment you will come back to this blog and link to your finished photos, wherever you have uploaded them.  If you are uploading your photos to an photo account and then uploading them to your blog, I recommend Flickr’.  Some places will compress your files during your upload, which causes a loss in quality.   Flickr’ allows you to upload without compression on even large files.

Lastly, you are required to have understanding for the person teaching this workshop because I am NOT A PROFESSIONAL!  So please have patience with little ol’ me.  I am learning as we go too.  Have any suggestions?  Well, bring ‘em on;  I’m listening and I looove suggestions.

When do we start you ask?  The date of the first assignment will be June 20th barring any natural disasters or Hallie disasters.  Don’t laugh, those of you that know me can attest to the truthfulness of this statement.

You can join here: ThroughTheLens-DigitalPhotography101-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.  After clicking this link, just send an email expressing your desire to join the group, or a blank email is fine also.

Produce in My Bed

June 9, 2008

I was a bit confused when Sarah yelled downstairs tonight asking me why I was hiding fruit in my bed.

Huh?

“What fruit?  Where?  What the heck are you talking about?”  was pretty much my response.

And then she explained that I had fruit flies all over my bed.

Dang.  Not again.  This makes two nights in a row they were sucked in through the window fan.

Why would the screen not keep them out you ask?  Well…way back when we were building my side of the house, a certain penny pinching relative, who shall remain nameless, ( I say this with the utmost love,) thought he we would save a bundle on windows that didn’t come with proper fitting screens.  In other words, there is a five inch gap between the top of my screen and the top of the window.  And if I wasn’t so afraid of heights and had a tall enough ladder, I’d fix the blasted thing myself.

Until then, I guess I’ll be sleeping with bugs.

Belle of the Ball

Today was party day and it sure got off to a rough start.   I woke up feeling really run down and achy and almost left church to go sit in the foyer.  By the time I got home, the last thing on earth I wanted to do was put together a tea party, but after a power nap, I pulled myself together and everything went fine.

I do however finally concede that I can’t do it all.  I have to be the hostess or the photographer, but not both.

Here are a few photos from our party.  I was too tired to properly fix them, so I quickly ran them through Lightroom.  Honestly, I don’t know how I would have time to post process without it.

Look at me I’m three!

Not a single broken tea cup today.

I said tea party, my dad thought rodeo…..

and then I thought Hee Haw.

When we started to sing Bella became very shy and wouldn’t look up.   She was very sweet; of course I’m not biased in any way.

All together now….pinkies out!

Depression Glass & Blueberry Drool

Today the kids and I did some party shopping for a wee child that is having a birthday tomorrow.  Our shopping involved a trip to Dunkin Donuts for fuel, some antiquing, and searching tag sales for a few hard to find items.  Although we were having a great deal of fun, Kylie and I quickly grew tired of dragging the kids in and out of the car, so at the last two places we asked Sarah stay in the car while we went into the store.

But by the the time we were ready to go into the second store Sarah had already had enough.  She looked at the two muffin covered faces on each side of her and said,

“Why do I have to stay in the car with the ‘Sticky Muffin Kids’ while you go have fun?  It’s like Children of the Corn, but different!”

A bit more dramatic than I cared for; however, she did win that argument.

I seriously detest using the flash, but man does that bad boy come in handy at 11:15 pm when you have forgotten to take your photo for the day.  And as you can see I was real choosy about my subject matter.

Ahhh….coffee.  My stomach hates me with it and my stomach hates me without it, so I might as well have it and enjoy myself.

Oh and I almost forgot, a certain Friendly Cashier I know has just published Letters From Your Friendly Cashier: Volume Two, so hop on over there and get yourself a copy!

This was covered with ants.  I’m surprised I avoided them in this shot.
