When Frosting Won’t Do

May 3, 2008

365/80

If you only knew how many times I looked at the pantry shelves for dinner.  Totally uninspired.  And look at what is on the shelves.  It’s no wonder why.

Okay, I admit, there are some days I want to sit down with a container of icing and a spoon to feel my head tingle from ungodly amounts of sugar, but I had children to feed.

I finally threw together chicken breasts, with rosemary, green onions, peppers, spinach, white wine and heavy cream.

Yum.  That did it.

My thighs told me so.

Project 365 – Day 43

I know, I know.  Yet another food picture.  And these scones from King Arthur Flour, were the best I’ve ever tasted!

I picked them up with quick in mind, to deliver to a neighbor that needed a little TLC and I was not disappointed with this boxed mix.

I am the type that used to do everything by hand.

When I had a life.

Now I need fast.  In fact, fast isn’t fast enough.  I need….the Jetson’s kind of fast.

Sorry.  I digress.

They were kind of a pain to mix.  The stickiness factor was off the charts, but worth every wasted paper towel and then some.

Ok, no more food pictures – for at least a day or two.  I think.

A Little Bit of This & That

Project 365 – Day 42

Today was almost a cereal day, but then we cleaned out the fridge and found a lotta goodies in there.  Like mozzarella-tomato ravioli and an avocado.  Oh and lest I forget my precious cilantro.  Usually you love it or hate it; I just happen to love it more than most people.

Have you noticed I have been blogging a lot about food this week?   Probably because I am trying to drop ten pounds and my mind is rebelling against the idea.

Project 365 – day 41

Please remind me next time, looks good doesn’t always mean tastes good.  It left much to be desired.

Project 365 – day 40

The other day I decided to try some Greek yogurt that was on sale at the grocery store.  It was a product called Chobani and as it turned out, it was possibly the worst thing I have ever tasted.  I immediately dismissed the idea of ever trying Greek yogurt again.

I mentioned my experience to Kimmie and she basically told me I was nuts if I didn’t like Greek yogurt and she opened up a container of The Greek Gods Greek Yogurt;  Angels suddenly began to sing.

It is quite possibly the best thing I have EVER tasted and I will never go back Dannon.

The consistency is velvety smooth; unlike any thing I have ever had and it is richer than cheesecake.  Nothing at all like American yogurt.

Now since trying Greek Gods, I have tried Fage and it is good, but not nearly as rich and flavorful as this.

The flavors available are Honey, (my favorite) Fig, Pomegranate, Vanilla, Plain and Non-Fat.

You can find it at certain health food and specialty stores and to make it easy, you can visit http://www.greekgodsyogurt.com and search for stores in your area that carry it.  If they don’t, then ask them to!  I promise you won’t be sorry.

Missing Gene Covered in Royal Icing

February 14, 2008

A couple of days ago I decided that we would attempt to locate my missing, overworked creative gene and whip up some Valentine’s Day treats. And we did whip up treats; however, the creative gene is still neatly tucked away in it’s hiding spot and will only be making rare appearances until life settles down.

And for good reason, this task took every last bit of energy I had in my cells.

It seems as though these kind of things always start off innocent enough with just an idea. “Hmm….wouldn’t it be a nice idea to make some Valentine’s Day cookies that we could bake together? We could even bring them to Bible study on Thursday morning.”

And so it begins. That seemingly benign little thought and the next thing you know you are elbow deep in multi-colors of Royal Icing and every bowl in your kitchen is dirty.

Don’t get me wrong, it was fun, even though it sucked the last bit of life out of me. Yet there is one thing we hope to conquer the next time my missing gene makes an appearance….the bridge between looks good, tastes good. Is it too much to ask that we have both? Royal Icing is just not pleasant to the palate.

One last thing I forgot to mention, today is the first day of my Project 365, (a photo journal project for 365 days.) Ok, you who know me stop laughing. I know I haven’t been posting often, but maybe this will give me the kick I need.
